We pat kids on the back and encourage them to do community service for its own sake.  We are misguiding youth.Dogooderism for its own sake does not transfer to adult volunteer habits if not couple with a passion for the thing being done unto.  Community service is not doing good in the community to get brownie points or put on a resume. Come on, we have people “serving time” by doing community service.  Juxtaposing community service with worthy efforts and punishment creates a disconnect.

The most effective community service builds up both the giver and receiver because the giver is giving from an overflow of interest or passion in the area and the receiver is in need of that particular overflow.  

Our best idea for community service?  Become a StrengthBank® Mentor in your local high school advisory period out of your personal overflow of gratefulness for the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.
